While your application as a whole will convey these points about you, the cover letter and video statement present ideal opportunities to make the case affirmatively, directly, and vividly, with examples and details strategically chosen. Optimizing your MIT Sloan Fellows cover letter and video statement Use the cover letter and video to convey fit with MIT Sloan’s enduring emphasis on admitting students who will be proactive, innovative leaders and agents of change. These items together should create a vibrant, multifaceted view of your candidacy: The cover letter serves as a lens, sets the context for understanding your candidacy, and, through the requested examples, delves (albeit briefly) into your experience. The video essay is your chance to show your fit with your prospective classmates, your understanding of what value you bring to them, and your social and emotional IQ. This last is important because the adcom wants people who, while being amazing in multiple ways, also can connect with people. Sloan Fellows students are expected to contribute substantially and distinctively among highly accomplished peers. MIT Sloan Fellows cover letter This global leadership development program is a 12-month, full-time executive MBA program designed to prepare an elite group of global mid-career managers with the management skills necessary to magnify their impact as leaders and innovators. Let’s break this question into three parts: Your professional objectives. Be specific about position, company/industry, expected scope of responsibilities, and vision for what you want to accomplish – this vision (your motivation) is what animates the goals discussion. Give more detail for the short-term goals; for the longer-term goal, show direction, but less detail. Your fit with the program. Identify and describe specific aspects of your professional objectives that align with the program’s offerings and resources. Focus on the 2-3 key elements of this fit and discuss them thoughtfully. Avoid a â€Å"laundry list† of points. Examples that show you meet the desired criteria. MIT Sloan Fellows video statement Please introduce yourself to your future classmates and let us know why the Sloan Fellows MBA program (SFMBA) is a great match for you. Videos should be a single take (no editing) lasting no more than one minute and consisting of you speaking directly to the camera. We recommend using an application such as QuickTime or iMovie to record yourself. First, keep your dual audience in mind: the hypothetical future classmates cited in the question AND the very real adcom. You need to present an effective elevator pitch to the former that also enhances your candidacy to the latter. Your future classmates will not know your resume, so include a professional snapshot, but keep the facts short (as they are redundant of other application info) and leaven them with the â€Å"why† behind the story – what propelled you onto this path. That â€Å"why† should be consistent with but not redundant of the cover letter). Every time, when I got my self into position to jump, I felt a flash of disbelief that was I was doing anything so perilous. But I always jumped. Otherwise I would have lost face with Phineas, and that would have been unthinkable. † P. 34In this passage Finny talked Gene into jumping off of a tall tree into the lake near their school in order to stay in their club. Once Gene is up on the tree he felt doubt that he would land safely. However, in order to stay friends with Finny, he had to do it. This is an Intratextual Connection because earlier in the novel Gene explains that even though he doesn’t like doing everything Finny feels like doing, he feels like he must stick with him. This relates to â€Å"About a Boy† as the main character, Marcus begins to spend time with Will even though everyone says that Will is not a good influence on him. Why do characters like Gene or Marcus seek friendship with people who are complete opposites if them? I believe that they seek friendship with opposite personalities because they both have low self esteem and seek amity through others. The beach was hours away by bicycle, forbidden, completely out of all bounds. Going there risked expulsion, destroyed the studying I was going to do for an important test the next morning, blasted the reasonable amount of order I wanted to maintain in my life, and it also involved the kind of long, laboured bicycle ride I hated. ‘Alright,’ I said. † P. 52Once again, in this passage Finny convinces Gene into doing something he knows is wrong; Phineas convinces Gene into biking off school bounds to the beach to spend the day. What is the reason for Gene not being able to just say no to Finny? How does Finny have such a strong influence on Gene? This passage is an Intratexual Connection because is connects to the passage on p. 34 where Finny convinced Gene into doing something else he thought was wrong, jumping off of a tree into a river. This connects to â€Å"About a Boy† as Will becomes such a strong influence in Marcus’ life that he begins to change his mannerisms (listening to different music, wearing more stylish clothes) and begins to make more friends at school because of it. â€Å"This didn’t seem completely crazy imagination in 1942, when jumping out of trees stood for abandoning a torpedoed ship. Later, in the school swimming pool, we were given the second stage in the rehearsal: after you hit the water you made big splashes with your hands, to scatter the flaming oil which would be on the surface. † P. 84As Gene speaks with Finny over the phone, he thinks about how much the school had changed and how almost everything revolves around the war. The private school had become engulfed with the fear of the war, and almost every boy was getting ready to be shipped out to Europe to fight for their country; the school’s responsibility was to get the students physically prepared rather than teach them an education. Gene, who isn’t very athletic and excels in academics becomes seems frustrated with the drastic change. This passage is Intertextual because in history class I read that in many countries, high school students would go through training for when they were shipped out to battle in WWII. I wonder if Gene enjoys the changes that have happened at Devon. The passage relates to â€Å"About a Boy† as both Gene and Marcus feel out of place in their schools, and have trouble adapting to their new environments. â€Å"Fear seized my stomach like a cramp. I didn’t care what I said to him now; it was myself I was worried about. For if Leper was psycho it was the army which had done it to him, and I and all of us were on the brink of the army. † P. 144In this passage, Gene goes to visit his friend Leper, who deserted the army after suffering hallucinations. Gene listens to Lepers stories about his experience and realizes that his friend has become mentally unstable and begins to fear for himself and his friends at school who will join the army once the year is over. Gene also seems to fear for his old friend Leper who left school early in order to join the army, Gene feels that Leper is too unstable to be left alone and is afraid that Leper might harm himself. This passage is Intertextual as I learned from the book â€Å"5th Business† that soldiers who come back from war are never the same, both mentally and physically due to the harsh living conditions in the trenches and the constant sight of death. I wonder if Leper suffered from â€Å"shell shock†, a common mental disorder of war veterans. This also relates to â€Å"About a Boy† as Marcus begins to worry for his mother who becomes mentally unstable and attempts suicide, Will begins to fear that his mother will try again and is convinced that he cant leave her alone. I never killed anybody and I never developed an intense level of hatred for the enemy. Because my war ended before I ever put on a uniform; I was on active duty all my time at school; I killed my enemy there. Only Phineas never was afraid, only Phineas never hated anyone. † P. 204In this passage, Gene speaks as his older self and reflects on the meaning of his experiences at Devon and then in the war. He suggests that every person, at a certain point in his or her life, decides that the world is a deeply hostile place and then finds enemies to fight with and kill. This passage is Intratextual as it mentions Gene’s â€Å"battle† involving Phineas and his accident and later on his tumble down the stairs at Devon which resulted in his death. I feel this relates to â€Å"About a Boy† as both Gene and the two main characters in â€Å"About a Boy† (Will and Marcus) fight their own â€Å"demons† throughout the book: Gene with his love/hate relationship with his best friend, Will with his efforts to fit in at school and stop the bullying, and Marcus with finally growing up and starting a serious relationship with a women. â€Å"I found it. I found a single sustaining thought. The thought was, You and Phineas are even already. You are even in enmity. You are both coldly driving ahead for yourselves alone. . . . I felt better. Yes, I sensed it like the sweat of relief when nausea passes away; I felt better. We were even after all, even in enmity. The deadly rivalry was on both sides after all. † P. 98 In this passage, Gene slowly becomes conscious of the incredible bitterness and envy that he feels toward Finny, who is a much better athlete, has a much stronger personality, and can talk his way out of any trouble. Gene begins to develop a strategy for coping with this anger: he tells himself that Finny feels exactly the same way, convincing himself that just as he envies Finny’s athleticism so must Finny envy Gene’s academic achievements. This is an Intratextual Connection as is connects back to the fact that these two characters are complete opposites, and even though they seem to be best friends there is a â€Å"deadly rivalry† between them in Gene’s eyes. I wonder if Gene is just imagining all of these things, maybe Phineas really is just a pure human being and wants the best for both of them. He had never been jealous of me for a second. Now I knew that there never was and never could have been any rivalry between us. I was not of the same quality as he. I couldn’t stand this. . . . Holding firmly to the trunk, I took a step toward him, and then my knees bent and I jounced the limb. Finny, his balance gone, swung his head around to look at me for an instant with extreme interest, and then he tumbled sideways, broke through the little branches below and hit the bank with a sickening, nnatural thud. † P. 120Here, Gene and Phineas are at the top of the tree where they do their usual jump into the river, Gene realizes that Finny never had any hatred towards him. Gene shifts his weight, which puts Finny off balance as he falls off the branch and injures his leg, leaving him a cripple. This quote is an Intratextual connection as it connects back to Gene’s obsessive thoughts about Finny constantly trying to sabotage his academics by convincing him to leave the school all the time. I wonder if Gene subconsciously shook the branch on purpose as he realized that Phineas was simply a better person than him, causing Gene to feel angry and act irrationally. By crippling Finny, Gene felt as if he would win their â€Å"battle† as Finny would loose his athleticism and charisma. â€Å"Listen, pal, if I can’t play sports, you’re going to play them for me,† and I lost part of myself to him then, and a soaring sense of freedom revealed that this must have been my purpose from the first: to become a part of Phineas. † P. 133Here, Gene gets a surprise phone call from the hospitalized Phineas. Finny asks how school was going and which teams he joined. Gene replies by telling Finny that he joined the rowing team†¦ as a manager. Finny tells Gene that he must compete in sports for him because of his crippling accident. This passage is Intratextual Connection because it refers to Phineas’ accident as he is unable to compete in sports anymore. Finny wants Gene to compete for him letting Finny live through his best friend Gene. I wonder if Gene will start competing in sports instead of being the guy on the sidelines.

But like every invention its use also had to come to an end with other inventions. The technique of placing the speakers behind the image on the screen was also appreciated as a move to create identification between the sound or music and the picture. But this proved to be a difficult task for technicians. The technicians had to more mobile compared to as before placing the speaker carefully so that perfect correspondence between the sound and picture would be visible to the audience. The year 1933 brought with it the major breakthrough in the American Industry in terms of sound system. The Bell Labs had experimented with the sound stereo and in 1940 a major electronic company demonstrated a four-track-stereo system. This stereo system was adopted by cinema owners in the early 1950’s. The stereo was expected to fulfill the tasks of both the technicians as well as what a sound system should fulfill. That is to say it completely leveled the needs of accuracy and of providing well coordinated sound to the audience. But the surround sound also held its disadvantage. Lucy and Ardi: Beginning of Human Origins Essay

Many people often consider our first milestone in life to be our first step. It is the beginning of many important developments as an individual. It was also the beginning of our development as a species. Dr. Donald Johanson and Dr. Tim White discovered two of the most amazing specimens that would be the stepping-stones to the beginning of evolutionary development. Australopithecus Afarensis (Lucy) and Ardipithecus Ramidus (Ardi) were the first fossils found in Africa that showed signs of early evolutionary development that is connected to Homo sapiens in the evolutionary tree. Lucy and Ardi are important to our evolutionary development because they were the first fossils to show upright walking as their primary locomotion. American paleoanthropologist, Dr. Donald Johanson, led the team that discovered Australopithecus Afarensis in 1974 at Hadar in the Awash Valley in Ethiopia. The discovery of Lucy was very significant, which was because the skeleton showed evidence of a small skull that resembled that of an ape and of bipedal upright walking that is akin to that of humans. Lucy is dated back to about 3. 2 million years ago. Lucy’s species survived for over 900,000 years, which is over four times as long as our own species has been around. A. Afarensis, which are similar to chimpanzees, grew rapidly after birth and reached adulthood earlier than modern day humans. Lucy was about the age of 11-12 years old but the formation of all of her teeth showed that he was fully matured for her species unlike modern day humans were that isn’t reach till later years (Johanson The Quest for Human Origins). This meant Lucy’s species had a shorter period of growing up than modern humans have today. A. Afarensis had both ape-like and human characteristics such as ape-like faces, which is described as flat nosed and sloping lower jaw that juts out underneath the braincase. Also Lucy had a small brain that was about 13 fluid ounces and 400 cubic centimeters, which is about one third the size of a modern human brain. They also had long, strong arms with curves fingers most likely adapted for climbing trees to hide the land animals that would attack them and also picking fruit from up in the trees. They also had small canine teeth that resembled early humans and most importantly had a body that stood on two legs and regularly walked upright. This was one of the most important features of A. afarensis because their adaptations for living both in the trees and on the ground helped them survive for almost a million years as the climate and environment changed (Johanson The Quest for Human Origins). Twenty years after the discovery of Lucy, Dr. Timothy White led a team into Middle Awash area of the Ethiopia where he discovered the first fossils of the second biggest discovery since Lucy. Ardipithecus Ramidus was uncovered in over 100 fossil specimens in the Awash area. At the time of the discovery, the genus Australopithecus was scientifically well established, so White devised the genus name Ardipithecus to distinguish this new genus from Lucy’s species. In 2009, scientists formally announce and published the findings of a partial skeleton nicknamed â€Å"Ardi†. Ardi is estimated to be about 4. 4 millions years old. Tim White and his team found bits and pieces of Ardi’s skeleton, which were heavily damaged due to erosion, and the pressure of geology. Ardi’s skull was flat with loping lower jaw that juts out underneath the braincase similar to Lucy. The pelvis of Ardi after being reconstructed from a crushed specimen, suggested that even though it was not as tall as the apes it showed similarities. Also it showed adaptations that combined tree climbing and bipedal activity. White and his colleagues that worked on Ardi suggested that Ardi was a female that was a bit large. She was about 1. 2 meters tall and about 50 kilos, which was a bit large since that was the size of a male afarensis (Johanson The Quest for Human Origins). Lastly a partial skeleton of Ardi combines human and other primate traits. Ardi moved in the trees using a grasping big toe, yet her pelvis was shorter and broader than an ape’s, indicating that she could walk bipedally. There were many pieces of evidence that proved Australopithecus afarensis to have been walking upright for thousands of years. Dr. Don Johanson brought up human like characteristics in Lucy’s bones that indicated she walked upright. One of Lucy’s most striking characteristics was her knee joint, which indicated that she normally moved by walking upright. Her greater trochanter, however, was clearly derived, being short and human-like rather taller than the femoral head (Lovejoy). Another piece of evidence that proves Lucy walked upright was the formation of her pelvis. Her pelvis and leg bones were almost identical in function to those of modern humans, showing with certainty that these hominids had walked bipedally. The third piece of evidence that made it undoubtedly that Australopithecus afarensis walked upright was the footprints found at Laetoli in northern Tanzania. In 1976, Mary Leakey discovered hominid footprints that was preserved in volcanic ash and unearthed 1978. â€Å"The Laetoli Footprints† and skeletal structure excavated showed clear evidence of bipedalism. Many believe the three individuals who made these footprints belonged to the species Australopithecus afarensis. The footprints demonstrated that Australopithecus afarensis walked upright habitually, as there were no knuckle or hand impressions found near the footprints. The footprints didn’t have the mobile big toe as the apes do; instead, they had an arch, which the typical modern humans have (Leakey 81-86). After the discovery of Ardipithecus Ramidus, Tim White and Owen Lovejoy came up with many pieces of evidence that would place Ardi on the Human Evolutionary Tree. The femur and pelvis of Ardipithecus have characters that indicate both upright bipedal walking and movement in trees. Ardi’s pelvis was more primitive than Lucy’s but still contained characteristics to walk upright bipedally. Researchers say Ardi was a facultative biped (Lovejoy). That means Ardi was able to walk on two legs but only for a short period of time. Donald Johanson said in â€Å"The Quest for Human Origins† that when moving on the ground Ardi would move bipedally, but when in the trees she was quadrupedal. Lastly Ardi had very large divergent great toe, which was probably used to climb trees. Using those feet to grasp on to the branches helped them stay out of the reach of the attackers on the ground and also climb to get fruit in the trees. Lucy and Ardi are two important specimens in history that helped us learn more about the past human origins. There were many differences and similarities between Ardi and Lucy. The main and probably most obvious similarity was the ability to walk upright. This was probably the most important characteristic that connected Homo sapiens, Australopithecus Afarensis and Ardipithecus Ramidus together. Also another similarity was the formation of both pelvises. Lucy’s was more distinctively similar to the modern human but Ardi’s still contained characteristics that made it more human than ape. Something that Ardi and Lucy also had in common was that both walked bipedally on the ground, but when in the trees they were quadrupedal. Being over a million years apart Lucy and Ardi also had some differences. Ardi was more primitive than Lucy in that she looked more like apes and had more characteristics of them. On the other hand Lucy was more developed than Ardi such as having a slightly bigger brain, having more human like anatomy when it came to the bones, and Australopithecus afarensis spent more of their days walking bipedally than in the trees. The discoveries of Australopithecus Afarensis and Ardipithecus Ramidus have changed the way we connect our human origins to the past. Dr. Donald Johanson and Dr. Timothy White have brought to us these wonders that help us understand not exactly where our species come from but where some of our human origins and characteristics started. With the evidence presented, I can agree with the interpretations of Ardi and Lucy because through science and reasoning there isn’t any doubts and anyone can bring up. There may be many subtopic arguments about the theory of evolution but they all end up with the same conclusions that Lucy and Ardi is the first stepping-stone to connect our human origins to the evolutionary tree. After Dr. Donald Johanson and Dr. Tim White discovered the two most amazing specimens that would happen to be the beginning of evolutionary development. Lucy and Ardi are important to our evolutionary development because they were the first fossils to show upright walking as their primary locomotion. After all the evidence that many anthropologist, archeologist, and paleoanthropologist discovered and examined to prove that Lucy and Ardi’s ability to walk upright is clear that they are ancestors in our human evolutionary tree.
